Potassium

Potassium (K) – Elevated

What it means?

Potassium (K) is an important electrolyte that helps regulate nerve signals, muscle contraction, and fluid balance in the body. However, potassium does not carry out these functions in hair. Elevated potassium in hair may suggest the body is retaining or mismanaging potassium. Because hair can also be affected by external factors such as shampoos or treatments, this result should be considered a screening indicator only, not a diagnostic finding.

Health connections:

An elevated potassium result may have no clinical significance, but in some cases, it can be associated with:

  • Electrolyte imbalance

  • Adrenocortical dysfunction or adrenal exhaustion

  • Kidney malfunction

  • Addison’s disease

  • Diabetic acidosis

  • Dehydration

  • Paralysis or muscle weakness

  • When hair potassium is significantly elevated, it is most often a sign of maldistribution, meaning potassium is being excreted into hair while body cells may actually remain deficient.

  • Health connections
Hair Potassium interpretation requires caution because most often indicated Potassium being excreted from the body as it is rejected due to excess Sodium, Ph imbalance or other sources which is interpreted as a deficiency or imbalances:

Hair analysis interpretation as part of “stress pattern” which is form by Calcium, Magnesium, Sodium and Potassium. Stress pattern is a marker for confirmation of a mayor disruption is happening

Symptoms that may be linked to elevated potassium include weakness, fatigue, irregular heart rhythm, numbness or tingling in the extremities, difficulty speaking (dysarthria, dysphasia), and mental confusion.

It is important to remember that hair analysis is not the same as a blood test, so these findings should be interpreted cautiously and in context with other laboratory results and symptoms.

Common sources / Notes:

  • Internal: adrenal or kidney issues, dehydration, or metabolic stress may influence potassium balance.

  • External: certain shampoos and personal care products can artificially raise potassium readings in hair.

Potassium (K) – Low / Deficient

What it means?

Potassium (K) is an essential electrolyte mineral that supports nerve signaling, muscle contraction (including the heart), and fluid balance. Low potassium in hair may reflect a general loss of potassium in the body, difficulty retaining it, or shifts in mineral distribution. However, hair is not the main site where potassium is active, so this finding should be considered a screening clue rather than a diagnosis.

Health connections

Low potassium may be associated with:

  • Adrenal stress or insufficiency

  • Diuretic use or excessive fluid loss (vomiting, diarrhea, sweating)

  • Chronic stress or fatigue

  • Malnutrition or inadequate intake of potassium-rich foods

  • Low stomach acid or poor absorption

  • Possible electrolyte imbalance linked to sodium, calcium, and magnesium shifts

Potential symptoms of potassium deficiency include muscle weakness or cramps, fatigue, constipation, irregular heart rhythm, low blood pressure, dizziness, numbness or tingling, and mood changes.

Common sources / Notes

  • Internal: dehydration, adrenal stress, excess sodium intake, or long-term illness.

  • External: hair treatments or shampoos rarely reduce potassium, so results usually point more toward internal balance.
