What it means?
Selenium (Se) is an essential trace element needed for antioxidant defense, immune function, and thyroid health. Its primary role is as a cofactor for the enzyme glutathione peroxidase, which protects cells from oxidative damage.
Hair selenium is a generally reliable marker of tissue and blood cell levels. Elevated Selenium may be interpreted as a deficiency in the tissues due to rejection of absorption into the cells.
However, it is highly sensitive to external contamination, especially from certain anti-dandruff shampoos containing selenium. Even a single exposure to such shampoo can significantly elevate hair selenium levels.
Health connections:
Most cases of elevated hair selenium reflect contamination, not internal overload, and it can be interpreted as a deficincy. Still, true selenium toxicity (selenosis) can occur with excessive intake.
